Returning Loaner Laptops

by Anonymous in , , ,

Dear Colleagues,

It is time to start thinking about returning any loaner laptops that were checked out from ITS during the pandemic.  Faculty and staff members who no longer need their loaner computers should return them at the earliest opportunity.  We will be reviewing our ticketing system and other records to follow up with individuals who were issued loaners to set specific return dates.

Loaners may be returned to us in Lindero Hall most normal business days between 9am and 4pm however, please do not drop into tech offices without making prior arrangements.  Login to the Solution Center portal and "view your tickets" to update your loaner laptop ticket indicating that you're ready to return the loaner.  If you can't find your loaner ticket, please submit a new ticket noting that you're ready to return a laptop.  One of our technicians will respond with time options for returning the laptop.

*Please remember to bring your power cord along with your loaner laptop*

Thank you for your partnership and stewardship in caring for CSUCI property.  Please contact the Solution Center at 805-437-8552 with any questions you may have about this process.

Cortana Daily Briefings

by Anonymous in , ,

Microsoft has recently released a new feature called Daily Briefing to all Office 365 users at CSUCI (staff, faculty, and student employees). The Daily Briefing from Cortana is a daily email designed to help users manage tasks, identify available time on their calendar, identify outstanding requests, and suggest focus time for users to work efficiently during their workday.

The Daily Briefing emails are personal and private and can be opted out at any time by visiting http://cortana.office.com and clicking the “Unsubscribe” button. Users may also click the unsubscribe link embedded in the body of each Daily Briefing email.

Not all users will notice the feature at the same time since Microsoft has begun releasing the Daily Briefing on a rolling basis. When the Daily Briefing emails are received, the subject line will read “Your daily briefing” and will come from Cortana.  If Cortana does not find any suggestions, no briefing email will be sent for that day.

For more information, please refer to Microsoft’s Cortana Daily Briefings FAQ Page.

If you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to submit an ITS Service Request or contact the Shared Services Solution Center at 805-437-8552.

Retirement of faculty.csuci.edu web hosting domain and migration to CI Keys

by Anonymous in , , , ,

Since 2015 and in partnership with Information Technology Services (ITS), CSUCI’s Teaching & Learning Innovations (T&LI) team has offered a free, superior web site hosting service for all faculty & students called CI Keys. CI Keys enables faculty and students to more easily build & maintain compelling web sites, blogs and other elements of their personal digital identity, using a highly flexible set of industry-standard tools. All faculty can sign up for CI Keys for free and easily create new web sites in CI Keys using Wordpress (the world’s most popular web content management platform, used to manage 15+ million websites and 75+ million blogs) and a number of other free tools.

Faculty that wish to learn more about CI Keys, including those who wish to jump in and start building their first Wordpress site, can visit the CI Keys site to get started.

ITS is encouraging all faculty that are actively using http://faculty.csuci.edu/ for their faculty web sites to begin using CI Keys as an alternative. CI Keys is a more flexible and functional platform for faculty (and students) to build & display their personal web pages. CI Keys even supports FTP for file upload and manual web site maintenance, so even if you don’t want to take advantage of Wordpress or the countless other wonderful features of CI Keys, porting your existing faculty web site into CI Keys should be fairly easy and straightforward.

The http://faculty.csuci.edu/ web site service has provided simple, reliable web site hosting for faculty since 2004, but it is an aging system which duplicates the significantly more flexible and robust functionality of CI Keys. In addition, the server hosting faculty.csuci.edu has also reached its end of life. For these reasons, ITS has begun the retirement of the existing faculty.csuci.edu web site service and expects to complete the service transition to CI Keys by January 15, 2021. This means that faculty will need to migrate any personal web sites from the faculty.csuci.edu domain to CI Keys no later than January 15, 2021.

Information Technology Services (ITS) and Teaching & Learning Innovations (T&LI) team members are here to help you ease into using CI Keys. Instructional technologist Michael McGarry in T&LI is your CI Keys point of contact, and he’s happy to meet with you to discuss your current instructional web site practices and how you can transition (and even improve or streamline) those practices into CI Keys. In the event that Michael McGarry is not available, Daniel Martinez in Web Services is available to assist you with the basics of how to access and migrate your content to CI Keys.

Please contact Michael McGarry (michael.mcgarry@csuci.edu) or Daniel Martinez (daniel.martinez@csuci.edu) with any questions or concerns about the transition to CI Keys. Feel free to forward this message to any other faculty colleagues who may be using http://faculty.csuci.edu for their faculty web sites.

Thanks for your cooperation, and wishing you a successful fall semester.

Chronicle of Higher Education – Potential Security Issue

by in , , , , , , , , ,

This is an important notice from the Information Security Team at CSUCI.  We have been notified that the data from recent third party site data breaches is flooding the Dark Web for sale (see “Hacker group floods dark web with data stolen from 11 companies“). One of the sites listed among those that were hit and where user data was compromised is “The Chronicle of Higher Education”, which had over 3 million user accounts were compromised. A major reason for concern is that Chronicle of Higher Education is a very popular website among academia and general password reuse is a common practice.  If these exposed accounts have been compromised on a third-party site, they can be used to access sensitive information on CSUCI’s secured networks.

If you are currently subscribed to The Chronicle of Higher Education, we are requesting you to do the following to protect and prevent any further information from being accessed by unauthorized users.

    1. Log into your account
    2. Click “My Account”
    3. Click “Password”
    4. Enter your current password
    5. Enter/create your new password
If you haven't done so already, register your myCI account on our DUO 2-Factcor Authentication (2FA) system. 2FA requires users to authenticate after entering their username and password. This is a great way to stop unauthorized users from accessing your account even if your username and password are compromised.

Fake Jobs Offered via Zoom and Text Message

by in , , , , , , , , ,

Have you received a job offer via text from a "Rosa at SLD"?

With a follow-up interview on Zoom?

CSUCI has seen an increase in job scams recently targeting our student population via text to their personal smartphone.

Here are some ways to spot these employment scams:
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Do your research, look online, and reach out to infosec@csuci.edu if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Most jobs require a resume, an interview, a background check, and a job application.
  • Asking you to buy a gift card to iTunes or any other service is a sign the offer is a scam.
  • Do not share your information until you have verified the possible employer as being legitimate.

Think you can spot a Phishing email? Take the Phishing quiz from Google https://phishingquiz.withgoogle.com

For on-campus jobs, please visit the Dolphin CareerLink:

Securing Zoom Meetings

by in , , , , , , , ,

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to increase demands for web video conferencing tools such as Zoom to continue teaching, learning, working and interacting with family and friends, the bad guys continue to find new ways to disrupt these Zoom sessions.

To assist you in avoiding some these pitfalls, CSUCI's Information Security department has created some tips on how to better secure your Zoom meetings.  These tips review some of the security features available within the Zoom application as well as some DO's and DON'Ts to safeguard your Zoom meeting(s).

Beware of Coronavirus (COVID-19) Phishing Scams

by in , , , , , , , , , , ,

Most of us have seen and read in the news about the Coronavirus outbreak, currently known as SARS-CoV-2 or Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). We wanted to remind you that during media intense events like this, cyber attackers take advantage of this opportunity and attempt to scam you or launch phishing attacks that attempt to get you to click on malicious links or open infected email attachments. Here are some of the most common indicators that the phone call or email you received is most likely a scam or attack (additional information on identifying scam phone calls and emails may be found at the Federal Trade Commission Consumer Information website).
  • Any messages that communicates a tremendous sense of urgency. The bad guys are trying to rush you into making a mistake.
  • Any message that pressures you into bypassing or ignoring our security policies and procedures.
  • Any message that promotes miracle cures, such as vaccines or medicine that will protect you. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Be very suspicious of any phone call or message that pretends to be an official or government organization urging you to take immediate action.

For the latest updates consider visiting the World Health Organization website on Health and Disease Control, the Center for Disease Control website, or our own CSUCI Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information website. Please keep in mind Coronavirus scams and attacks can happen at work or at home, via email, text messaging or even over the phone. Don’t fall victim to bad guys playing on your emotions.

If you feel you have received a phishing attack at work, simply delete the message or if you have concerns report it to your information security team.

2-Factor Authentication is Coming to CI!

by in , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past months CI has been in the process of rolling out DUO’s 2-factor authentication solution to increase CI’s overall security posture and to better protect your myCI accounts. 2-factor (which is sometimes called 2-step or multi-factor) authentication or 2FA/MFA, is the process by which a user accesses a computer system or software application using two (or more) forms of authentication to log in to that system or application. The forms of authentication are often described as using, “something you know”, “something you have” and “something you are”. One factor is typically a username and password (something you know). A second factor can be the use of a mobile app, a phone call or text message, or hardware token (something you have) or, in some cases, the use of a fingerprint or retinal scan (something you are). Without at least two forms of verification, the login will fail.

CI is continuing its rollout to the faculty and staff community during the month of November with an anticipated completion date of November 30, 2019.

What to Expect:

During this time period you will receive an email from DUO inviting you to enroll in the system. Please read over the email carefully, and then follow the instructions to enroll yourself in the system.

Please note:

If you do not wish to use the DUO Push Mobile App on your mobile device, you may pick up a token at the Solution Center desk in the Broome Library 1350 from Anderson Hanchett Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 AM and 11:30 AM and again between 1:30 PM and 5:00 PM.

It is required that you register at least two (2) methods of authentication. These could be any of the following:

  • Mobile App and Token
  • Token and (unshared) desk phone
  • Token and mobile phone (to call)

Additional information regard 2FA at Channel Islands may be found at these links:

Thank you for your support in keeping Channel Islands a secure computing community.
If you have any questions about the 2-Factor Authentication rollout, please contact your information security team at infosec@csuci.edu.

CSUCI Deploys MATLAB and Simulink Anywhere Access for Students, Educators, and Researchers

by Anonymous in , , ,

New Total Academic Headcount (TAH) license underscores university’s commitment to bettering its learning environment

California State University Channel Islands signed an agreement with MathWorks that provides all of our students, educators, and researchers campus-wide access to MATLAB, Simulink, and additional products. California State University Channel Islands joins more than 800 schools worldwide already using the MathWorks TAH campus-wide license.

CSUCI’s adoption of MATLAB and Simulink for technical computing and Model-Based Design further demonstrates the school’s commitment to continuously enhancing the learning environment for its students, educators, and researchers by providing anywhere access to cohesive industry-standard tools.

Our MATLAB and Simulink campus-wide TAH license includes analysis, design, modeling, simulation, code generation, and testing products for the engineering and science schools, plus computational finance for the business and economic schools. We are deploying these tools to students, educators, and researchers via a centralized license that increases the administrative efficiency of software management and distribution, and ensures that a common set of tools is readily available for all users.

Through the agreement between CSUCI and MathWorks, users will have access to software and associated documentation as well as immediate access to new releases. The TAH license permits the installation of MATLAB and Simulink on campus-managed and user-owned computers.

For instructions on downloading the software go to the California State University Channel Islands’s MATLAB Portal. Use your Dolphin User Name and Password to login and download the software.  You'll link your Dolphin User Name to your existing Mathworks account or if you don't already have one, you can create an account as part of the download process.

Access free, self-paced training to get started in less than 2 hours:  MATLAB Onramp.  You may also contact the IT Solution Center if you require further assistance with installation of MATLAB.
