ITS Department Tech-E Trophies Awarded

Recognizing Excellence in Service and Profession since 2011

In 2011 the ITS department sought a means to recognize and celebrate the people who keep all the technological plates spinning at CI.  The men and women of ITS work hard on many fronts, making sure that all the programs, applications, devices and connections that the campus depends on to meet our common mission are working at all times.  The ITS Tech-E award (a take on a common term for tech people--“techie” and the E for excellence)  was born out of this desire to recognize their hard work.  A committee of ITS peers was selected who worked together to identify and describe the traits that mark an EXCELLENT worker and these traits are included on the semi-annual nomination forms to help people identify those ITS personnel who best exemplify those traits.  In recognition of the fact that many ITS personnel do not get much face time outside of the department, eventually two separate but similar awards were created.  The Tech-E for Excellence in Profession is voted on by the ITS group only and is presented to that person who voters felt most exemplifies the traits of a positive attitude, dependability, approach-ability, innovation, and unselfishness.  The Tech-E for Excellence in Service recognizes those same traits but is voted on by the entire campus community of Faculty and Staff.

(Side note:  Nominations will be sought again in the middle of the Spring Semester; keep an eye out for that email and nominate the ITS individual who represents excellence in Service to you!)

At a departmental Lunch and Learn the week of December 10th, two new winners were identified and were recognized for their contributions.  This semester the ITS Tech-E award for Excellence in Profession was awarded to Pedro Rivas.  Pedro is a member of the ITS Infrastructure Group who is a System Admin and focuses largely on ID Management work and is an innovator in many other areas.  Pedro has the distinction of having worked at CI as a student assistant for the Infrastructure group and eventually graduated not only with a degree in Computer Science but also a full-time job with ITS!  The Tech-E award for Excellence in Service was presented to Anderson Hanchett.  Anderson has been working (and excelling!) as an Information Technology Consultant for the Solution Center for nearly 18 months.  In this role, he handles many issues for users with desktop computers, laptops, wireless, and printing issues and has clearly stood out as a great example of ITS Excellence.  The entire ITS department congratulates these two fantastic hard-working colleagues!

by Anonymous in , , ,

We're so excited that CSUCI's Art Program web site (which launched in November 2016) was nominated for a Webby! The site was designed and implemented by T&I's talented Web Services team.

2017 Webby Awards - We've been nominated. Help us make internet history and vote!

Vote for CI now at http://go.csuci.edu/webby. Hurry, voting ends on Thursday, April 20!

Happy birthday, dear web site!

by in , , ,

Our little darling just turned one! On Saturday, August 15, CI's mobile-friendly responsive web site celebrated its first birthday, and we sure are proud of it.

It's been a great first year, and here's what we have to show for it:

13% increase in pageviews of the CI web site overall
27% increase in pageviews of the About CI page
41% increase in pageviews of the Academics page
65% increase in pageviews of the Visit Campus and campus tours pages
69% increase in pageviews of the main Admissions page (Admissions & Costs)
145% increase in pageviews across all Admissions pages
468% increase in pageviews across all tuition and fees pages
1421% increase in pageviews of the Student Life page

...and other significant increases across academic and administrative web sites...

...and a 29% decrease in our bounce rate across all primary CI web site properties...

...and a 39% decrease in exit percentage across all primary CI web site properties.

What do all these stats mean? They mean that more people are visiting the CI web site, and people are engaging more deeply with our web content.

If that wasn't enough, our web site was also recognized with 3 awards:

2014 Collegiate Advertising Awards Silver Winner in Website Design
2015 CASE District VII Award of Excellence (Bronze) for Institutional Web Sites (PDF)
30th Annual Education Advertising Awards Merit Award for www.csuci.edu

Not too bad for a young university in Camarillo!

Since we launched, we've continued to make incremental improvements. Some highlights include:

  1. Establishing a rapid, rotating refresh cycle for the banner images on the CI home page.
  2. Changing the home page banners from static images to clickable images. We'll be keeping track of how this change in functionality increases our visitor interaction.
  3. Working closely with our Enrollment Management team to develop and deploy a new consolidated "Calendars" page, which combines events, important dates and deadlines for prospective and incoming students.
  4. Integrating new videos to help prospective students, parents and visitors to get to know CI.
  5. Migrating all but 3 of our academic program web sites to our new mobile-friendly, responsive web site design, including subsequent re-designs of the Anthropology, Chicana/o Studies, and Nursing web sites.
  6. Upgrading our Google Analytics to use Google Tag Manager to help us better manage our web analytics.
There's still a lot more that's in progress:
  • Migration of our Giving, Extended University and Library web sites to our new mobile-friendly, responsive design
  • An updated electronic campus tour and viewbook
  • Updates to the Housing and Dining web sites
  • Migration of CI-developed web applications that are still using our legacy web framework.
How did we get here? A fantastic team of web professionals and student assistants worked with our entire campus community to turn ideas into reality, and our strategic partner Stamats helped us to identify and document an effective and long-lasting web and social media strategy. Check out last year's web site preview for more detail about the principles that guided the creation of our web site.

Please join me in celebrating the 1st birthday of the new CI web site, and I encourage you to share any comments or suggestions in the comments here (or via email to peter.mosinskis@csuci.edu).

Bill Ochs named 2012 T&C Tech-E award winner

by Anonymous in , ,

Bill Ochs, a member of the User Services Department, was awarded the 2012 Tech-E Award for Excellence in Service at the annual T&C BBQ in June. The Tech-E was created by Technology & Communication to honor a staff member who exemplifies our values of "Extreme Service".
Bill works primarily with the Extended University, supporting EU administrators and staff as well as faculty and students associated with EU courses. Bill has also taken a lead role in supporting Blackboard Collaborate, a tool for video collaboration, for the entire campus. He presented on a panel at EduSoCal '12, sharing best practices for helping faculty using Collaborate.
Tech-E award winners are nominated by members of the campus community. Some of the comments that the awards committee received about Bill included:

  • You won't find a person with a better attitude - whether it's a faculty, staff or student asking the same question for the 100th time or being called to work in an area outside of his normal scope.
  • I don't think "No" is in his vocabulary
  • Conveys passion and takes personal ownership towards the university…and strives to make a more accessible environment for everyone.
  • The most efficient worker I have ever had the pleasure of working with
  • His unending patience, good humor, creativity, and resourcefulness in accommodating our ever-changing needs is legend.
The photo above shows Bill(R) being presented the Tech-E trophy by Hai Le(L), last year's awardee. Congratulations to Bill for this recognition of his Extreme Service!
