goCI v2.1: View your class schedule, grades and open lab computers

by in , , , ,

We're excited to announce that on Monday, January 16, 2017 we officially launched v2.1 of our goCI mobile app.

The updated app now includes the following 3 new modules:

"Register": now you can view your class schedule, grades from previous semesters, and browse the course catalog.

"Pay Now": pay your tuition and other fees for your student account online through the app.

"Labs": view how many computers are available in the open labs on campus (currently only Broome Library labs are listed).

We are also working on an enhancement for the "Register" module that will enable you to find classes in the course catalog, as well as add, drop and swap those classes. Testing is currently underway, and we expect to launch these enhancements in February.

Have a great idea for the goCI mobile app? Let us know! Contact Peter Mosinskis, Director of IT Strategy at peter.mosinskis@csuci.edu

Celebrate International Password Day!

by in , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

There are all sorts of days to celebrate during the year such as Mother's Day and Father's Day, and even some more off-the-wall days such as National Fried Chicken Day, Talk Like a Pirate Day, and a personal favorite, National Pancake Day.  But today is an extra special day that should be added to everyone's calendars.  Today is International Password Day!

International Password Day gives us all the opportunity to stop and reflect on what makes a good password, and how we can best protect our work and personal data by using strong password concepts.

To help you along, there's even a website dedicated too helping you figure out what makes a good password, how to deal with keeping track of the never ending list of passwords, mobile device passwords, and even some funny stories about password catastrophes!

Please take the time in joining your information security team in making every day a strong password day!

goCI is now available

Along with today's wireless upgrade announcement, we also pleased to release v2.0 of the goCI app for iOS, Android and other mobile devices.

goCI v2.0 was completely re-built from the ground-up using the Modo Labs Kurogo platform and provides some important new updates, including:

  • improved map and wayfinding capabilities;
  • a more flexible, tablet-friendly interface; and
  • better support for Windows phones and other mobile web devices, via m.csuci.edu
The last change is probably the biggest: now you can access most of the features of the goCI native app using the web browser on your smartphone. Just visit the goCI mobile site, located at m.csuci.edu.
We are still working on some big updates for goCI v2.1, (including mobile course registration and payment), which will continue throughout the summer. Our implementation team is working with our partner Modo Labs to resolve some technical limitations relating to how CI Records (our student records system) authenticates & communicates with goCI.

Please contact Peter Mosinskis, Director of IT Strategy, at peter.mosinskis@csuci.edu with any questions or comments about goCI v2.0, and thanks for your ongoing support in making CI a more mobile-friendly campus.

Mobile-friendly email, web and myCI changes launch on August 8 and 15

by in , , , , ,

The Division of Technology & Communication has been working on several updates to email, web and myCI services to provide a more mobile-friendly experience to the CI community.

Beginning at 5pm on Friday, August 8, T&C will begin maintenance to launch an updated web-based version of Microsoft Outlook for employees. Email will be unavailable at various times during the maintenance period (August 8 at 5pm until Sunday, August 10 at 8pm). Please review the Outlook and MyCI preview screenshots PDF for screenshots of the new Outlook interface (for desktop and for mobile devices) to familiarize yourself with the new user interface. Once the maintenance is complete, you may continue access to your email via myCI.

On August 15, CI will launch a more mobile-friendly web site. For background information on this project, please visit: http://beta.harbor.csuci.edu/preview/.

In addition, myCI will have a new mobile-friendly interface starting on August 15. To prepare for the new look & feel, please familiarize yourself with the new myCI interface as shown in the Outlook and MyCI preview screenshots PDF

The functionality of applications in the "My Links" section of myCI (such as CI Records, CI Learn, etc.) will NOT change as a result of the myCI update. Aside from some minor re-ordering of the modules once you log in, the module names and locations have stayed the same. However, if you have produced documentation using screenshots which describe processes using myCI, please review your process documentation to ensure that it is still appropriate.

The URL for myCI will remain the same; you may still access myCI at https://myci.csuci.edu.

Visitors to the forthcoming CI web site may continue to access myCI from the forthcoming CI homepage by clicking on the “myCI” link at the top of the page (on a smartphone or tablet, this means clicking the menu icon at the top of the page; please see the attached "ci-web-menu-icon" image for reference.)

Please contact Carlos Miranda at carlos.miranda@csuci.edu or call 805-437-8552 with any questions or concerns about these updates, and thanks for your support in making CI a more mobile-friendly campus.

goCI is here! CI's official mobile app

by in , , , ,

After several months of development, we're pleased to announce that goCI, CI's official mobile app, is now available for iOS and Android devices. goCI helps students, employees and campus visitors get fast, easy access to the campus directory, map, events calendar, and much more! Visit the goCI support page to download the free app and to learn about goCI's features.

It's the first version of the app, so there are some bugs that we know about (listed on the goCI support page). Rest assured, we're working closely with our partner Blackboard on fixing these bugs as quickly as possible. If you come across any other problems or have a suggestion for a new feature, feel free to report them using the goCI Mobile Feedback form

Major Apple security flaw found. Patches issued and should be applied.

by in , , , , , , , , ,

Apple rushed to release iOS 7.0.6 on Friday and OS X 10.9.2 today with patches for a shockingly overlooked SSL encryption issue that leaves iPhone, iPad and Mac computer users open to a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack.  All users of iOS 7 and Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9) should download and apply these patches.  The vulnerability is not present in versions of OS X prior to OS X 10.9 Mavericks or iOS prior to iOS 6.

Print from your mobile phone, tablet or laptop

by in , , ,

In case you missed the announcement in the August 22 issue of Wavelength, Technology & Communication is very pleased to announce a new service which enables students and employees to print documents from their mobile phone, tablet, or laptop.

Printing from any of these devices is a simple, 3-step process:

  1. Attach any documents you want to print to an email from your official CI email address and send the email & attachments to:
    PrintBW@csuci.edu for black-and-white printing; OR
    PrintCOLOR@csuci.edu for color printing

  2. You'll receive an automated email reply from "Pharos Mobile Printing" confirming that your document is ready to be released.
  3. Finally, go to any MobilePrint-compatible printer on campus and release your print job using your DolphinOne Card
MobilePrint-compatible printers are located throughout Broome Library and many other spaces on campus.
You must complete the release of your print job at a MobilePrint printer within 2 hours, otherwise you'll need to re-send via email again (as described in Step #1 above).

Mobile Users: watch "Mobile Campus" episode #2

by in , , , ,

About 2 weeks ago, we introduced a new video series about making CI more mobile-friendly.

In Episode 2, we discuss mobile users, as well as some of the challenges they face, and how to keep them happy.

What other challenges face mobile users at CI? Share your thoughts here, and stay tuned for more episodes!

The Mobile Campus - new T&C video series

by in , , ,

In March 2013, the Division of Technology & Communication (T&C)  hosted the first Open Forum on Mobile Strategy and "unconference".

The lively discussion at the forum emphasized the varying levels of awareness of mobile concepts and strategies by members of the CI community. Three themes recurred frequently in discussions:
  • "Keeping up with the rate of change for [mobile] technology"
  • building a "baseline of commonplace knowledge" for what works well on mobile devices (and what doesn't); and
  • providing "simple steps to get started" for users and organizations that want to "go mobile"
To help introduce mobile concepts and terminology to the CI community, T&C is pleased to introduce a new video series of short episodes about making CI a more mobile-friendly place. These videos will be hosted on a new "Mobile Strategy" web site, along with news and other resources related to mobile technology at CI.

What does "mobile" mean anyway?  In short, it's about a lot more than just mobile devices. Watch our first episode (about 2 minutes) about how we define what "mobile" means:

Important notice regarding student Dolphin Email and CI Docs

by in , , , , ,

Earlier today, the Division of Technology & Communication (T&C) became aware of an email addressing issue in Dolphin Email. The problem was introduced as a result of changes made during the launch of CI’s new document collaboration service, CI Docs.

This change created some confusion for students using Dolphin Email, resulting in some students sending emails to faculty email addresses that do not exist. To immediately reduce confusion at this critical time of the semester, this evening (Wednesday, December 5, 2012), T&C will disable the global address list within all Dolphin Pod services, including CI Docs and Dolphin Email.

When sending email from Dolphin Email, please remember that all official CI faculty and staff email addresses end in “@csuci.edu, and all student email addresses end in “@myci.csuci.edu”. There are no faculty or staff email addresses that end in “@myci.csuci.edu”.

You can check for correct student, faculty and staff email addresses in the CI Campus Directory, or by replying directly to an email sent to you from the person you are trying to contact. Dolphin Email users can also check their “Sent Mail” to verify that email has been sent to the intended email address.

In addition, this change will temporarily eliminate the ability to look up faculty & staff user names for document sharing in CI Docs, although it does not otherwise restrict document sharing functionality with faculty and staff in any other way. We are working on resolving this issue and will provide further updates on this blog.

T&C is committed to providing easy-to-use services to our community, and we apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this issue may have caused.

Please contact the T&C Help Desk via email at helpdesk@csuci.edu or call 805-437-8552 with any further questions about Dolphin Email, CI Docs or Dolphin Pod.

Online payment is here!

by in , , , , , , ,

As mentioned in a previous post regarding online payment, in cooperation with Budget and Fiscal Services, T&C is pleased to announce the launch of the CashNet eMarket service, the official online payment service of CI. CashNet eMarket is replacing existing campus PayPal accounts for taking online payment for events, products and services.

So far, eMarket has been deployed for 2 systems: online purchase of parking permits, and for registration for the upcoming SCCUR conference.

As of today, October 1, 2012, requests for new eMarket sites can be submitted by campus organizations to Budget & Fiscal Services. A full description of the process and the eMarket request form are available on the CashNet  eMarket web site.

In addition, as of October 2, 2012, Student Business Services and Budget and Fiscal Services will no longer take requests for configuration of new PayPal online payment sites.

Over the course of the fall 2012 semester, Budget & Fiscal Services will work with programs and organizations that are using PayPal to migrate them to CashNet eMarket, with the goal of completing migration and conversion of all existing PayPal payment sites to eMarket sites by December 31, 2012.

Please contact cashnet@csuci.edu with any general questions about the new CashNet eMarket service, or CI's online payment functionality.
